Special Thanks to our Independence Day Sponsor - Desert Sun Motors for their support! Please visit Desert Sun Motors for your next vehicle purchase!
The night started out nice and clear with very warm temps and about 50% humidity. Once the intermission was over, the next few hours gave us occasional sprinkling showers (Very Minor) with some serious weather in the background, lurking in the distance. Many folks will look into the distance for the bad weather before the races, to judge weather or not to come out and stay, but even the worst storms lurking in the distance just seem to float around this area without much interuption. The track employees often call our area around the track the "Bermuda Triangle of Otero County" because the weather will threaten alot but usually nothing ever happens. The Fans hung on and Mother Nature took care of the dust control. The Independence Day Show finished with some intence racing. Durring intermission, the track lights were extinguished and there was a nice 30 minute show of non stop fireworks just after the Dash 4 Cash races.
The H&B Stocks were out first with Fredrico Flores in the 58F jumping in to the lead early on and he was unstopable. Jon McDaniel and Kevin George came up fom the back and held a strong race. In the 24 car of Jorg Rottland there was a substitute driver that was visiting from Germany, Uwe Glassner. It it always a pleasure to enjoy the night with our German Neighbors' and even better when they get to come back and visit!
The A/C Print & Design Steet Stocks had 13 cars in the field and was smooth and fast. Billy McDaniel in the 17 Chevy came from the back and picked them off, methodically, one by one. Billy now has 3 Main Event wins in his pocket and is the current Points Chase Leader! Witt Palm in the 12W has been a serious contender in the Street Stocks and has been in the top 5 for the last several races, he was just inches behind Billy in the end. The top 6 in the field were pretty evenly paced on the track.
The Southwest Super Trucks had 18 trucks that put on a great show. With just a few cautions, the race was pretty fast and smooth. Danny Efird had the early lead for many laps but Brady Alberson, the current Points Champion, was faster on the high side. His Brother, Garrett Alberson in the 101 was not far behind. Walton Kyle Sr. and Levi Roberts gave it their best on the dry slick track, finishing in the top 5.
The NM Mini Sprints came out in great numbers for their first visit. 18 cars were on the list ( Final results were not avalible at this time). These mini sprints were faster than the Super Trucks, turning lap speeds averaging in the 87 MPH range with a 600cc motorcycle engine. These guys were able to get thier cars dialed in by the mains and they put on a fast show with only 2 cautions and no major wrecks. The spectators sure do enjoy the high speed mini's that come to visit and we hope to see them back again.
Finally, the Main Event. The NMMRA Non-Wing Sprints were the show to see. There were 24 cars registered but 19 able to finish.
The head flagman, Kent Eves, didn't like their start and with a second try they were off. By lap 25 out of 30, Wesley Wofford spun out in turn 2 and was nailed by another car in the front end and this left Wesley's car all tore up and him a little dazed as the track crew walked him to safety and he checked out ok. Later in the race were some pretty crazy wrecks. The 52R was pinned into the wall on the front sraight by another sprint and this launched him straight into the air, spun around backwards and then cleared another sprint car while landing on all 4's backwards. WOW! There were a lot of close calls with accidents ocurring. The sprints were just getting a bit wild until the Flagmen signaled to the drivers' to use their heads and settle down. After that there were no more cautions and the laps flew by. Kyle McCutcheon jumped up front early in the race and had kept a 1/4 track lead on the pack while passing cars through out the night. He found his speed best by idling through turn one and two while running wide open the rest of the track! The out of town drivers' were still getting used to the new track, this is their 2nd visit at WSS, and proved the local boys know whats best. Don Grable from the Renegade Sprint Series was the next best contender along with Brandon Schure in the top 4. Scott Box, the previous NMMRA - WSS race winner, had a really solid run finishing #3.
Due to camera issues, Main Winners' Pictures are not avalible this race.
Congradulations to all of thoes winners and special thanks to our visitors and out of town guests that came out to enjoy their 4th of July with US!
